With so much effort to shift fossil fuel-intensive energy sources towards electricity, an important aspect of climate change mitigation is reducing the GHG emissions associated with the production of that electricity. Efforts are already underway, with solar panels added to three City buildings with two additional arrays installed to support operations at Charlottetown’s wellfields. Additionally, current provincial programs as well as Charlottetown’s former Switch Charlottetown financing program have supported the installation of solar panels at the community level. Renewable energy projects are costly and, to ensure they’re viable, efforts need to be taken to ensure that the model employed, the type of energy used, the location, and the partners involved yield maximum benefits environmentally, socially, and economically.
